Diana Ross is one of the highest celebrated and prized musicians and actresses of the States. She began her career as a member of the world renowned girl band of the 1960s and 1970s, The Supremes. This band has, to this date, been known as one of the most commercially successful bands of America and the ‘most successful vocal group' for throwing 12 singles that reached Number 1 on Billboard Hot 100. It all began when Diana Ross, Florence Ballard, Betty McGlown and Mary Wilson formed the band named as The Primettes and later The Primes with Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams in 1959. The following year, Betty McGlown left and Barbara Martin came to replace her. Together, the four girls formed The Supremes.
1960s brought the peak time of the popularity and success of the band when they rivaled a sper-renowned band like The Beatles and paved ways for future R&B and soul singers to get to the mainstream scene from the African American community. Due to the success of the band with Diana Ross as the lead singer, the name, The Supremes, was later renamed to Diana Ross & the Supremes. In 1977 however, Diana Ross left the group to pursue her solo career.
