Born in Trinidad as Leslie Sebastian Charles, Billy Ocean is a British based musician focusing on popular music. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Bill Ocean has produced a number of internationally popular R&B hits. Before topping the charts in the United States, Billy Ocean produced 20 singles that topped charts in the United Kingdom. Billy Ocean's interest and talent in music had become evident from a very young age when he moved to London from Trinidad and Tobago at the age of eight. He got inspired from the musical scene and in his teen ages, began performing at different clubs around the city. He released his first single in 1972 when he was working as a tailor.
Ocean's first album came out in 1976, from which, the single, 'Love Really Hurts Without You' topped chats in the UK and US. Other singles from the same album were also highly applauded. Following this success, Billy Ocean wrote songs for many other singers and the year 1981 won him U.S. R&B chart for Nights (Feel Like Getting Down). The year 1984 brought Ocean, the height of his success with his album, Suddenly, from which came the Grammy Award winning single, African Queen that was also known with its other name, European Queen. Billy Ocean then gave a number of memorable performances and enjoyed his songs being played in TV serials. His third album was also well received but his 1993 album, Tim To Move On, could not succeed. The 1998 release of his Greatest Hits however, took him back on the charts.
In 2002, the singer got an honorary doctorate in music from University of Westminster and in 2004, he re-released Carr bean Queen that shot up to number 25 in Billboard chart. Billy Ocean re-released more of his older songs and toured the world. In 2010, he was presented the Lifetime Achievement Award at MOBO Awards.
