The B-52s is an American band that was formed in 1976 in the city of Athens, Georgia. The group comprises five members namely; Ricky Wilson, Fred Schneider, Keith Strickland, Cindy Wilson and Kate Person with each of them handling different instruments and tasks. Where Schneider has been involved with percussion and vocals, Cindy Wilson and Kate Pierson are also vocalists with Pierson also handling the keyboard. Keith Strickland is the drummer of the band while Ricky Wilson is the guitarist. The B-52s started their career with the 1960s rock and roll and New Wave but later stepped into many other genres covering pop rock as well as post-punk. Overall, the band has maintained the image of and always presented themselves as enthusiastic and positive, going all wild with the youth and celebrating happiness with romance.
Until before 1977, the band had performed on small basis with their last such performance being in a Chinese restaurant. After this, there was no looking back and in 1977, The B-52s held their first concert. It was not a commercial one though but a gathering of friends at Valentine’s Day. The name of the band was suggested by the member, Keith Strickland, when he saw in a dream that while performing in a hotel lounge, someone whispered the name of the band in his ear as being 'The B-52s'. Until 2008, this name was written as B-52's but the apostrophe was then dropped and it is now, simply The B-52s.
The band has received popularity all over the United States, has been nominated several times in many music awards and has enjoyed top positions on many album and song charts. They also appeared in a movie. It is primarily due to their changing style as per the eras. The B-52s still do around 50-60 concerts in a year and have a large audience.
