Big Star is an American boy band that formed in 1971 in the city of Memphis in Tennessee. The main focus of the band was supposed to be rock which got little or no recognition during the time the band survived. It was only after the disbandment of Big Star in 1980s and upcoming bands began to show influence from their style of music. British bands such as The kinks and The Beatles along with American bands such as The Beach Boys and The Byrds were what Big Star mainly drew attention from. Due to a series of disbandment and mishaps, the line-up of the band changed several times but its initial members were Jody Stephens, Alex Chilton, Andy Hummel and Chris Bell.
In 1971, Big Star released their first album which was titled as #1 Record received highly positive reviews but lack of proper publicity, it did not receive commercial success. Frustration and misunderstandings within the band had begun but the second album was also being worked on. By the time the album was relapsed, Hummel and Bell had left the band. The second album, Radio City also failed commercial success but received enthusiastic reviews. The third album could not be released on finishing as it was deemed to non-commercial and in 1974 the band broke up shelving the album. It was later released titled as Third/Sister Lovers. Bell died in a car accident shortly after this release.
Stephens and Chilton reformed the band with Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer in 1993. Tours began and the band remained active. A new album was released in 2005. 2008 saw the death of Chilton while 2010 saw the death of Hummel for natural causes. Today, Stephens, being the only remaining founding member is running the band with Stringfellow and Auer.
