About Fat Freddy's Drop

Fat Freddy's Drop was originally a jam band that was formed by members from various bands in the city of Wellington, New Zealand. It formed in the late 1990s. Due to the increasing popularity of the band and decline of the others, by 1999, Fat Freddy's Drop became the sole focus of all band members. Their genres of focus have been rhythm and blues, dub, jazz, reggae, techno and soul all throughout their 11 year career. Fat Freddy's Drop has been largely popular for their stage performances that comprise not just arty settings and fabulous acts but also improvisation of their songs that they perform in New Zealand and on tours aboard.

Although the band has been performing since early 1990s, it was not until the release of their 2003 hit, Midnight Marauders that they gained international recognition. In 2005, Fat Freddy's Drop released its first studio album by the name, Based on a True Story. Right after its release, the album topped sales in New Zealand becoming the first album ever to have been released in the country to have made this record. In the same year, it won the Best Album award at New Zealand Music Awards. It remained amongst the top 40 albums for around two years making, Fat Freddy's Drop one of the most successful contemporary bands in New Zealand.

In the next album, the band experimented with further genres including Bhangra in their songs and thus, gained more international recognition. Today, Fat Freddy's Drop is enjoying tours of various countries and international fame, particularly in Europe and Oceana region.
